Blocked Bath & Shower Drain in Sheffield

Bath and shower drains block with hair, soap scum, and — in Sheffield's hard-water area — limescale narrowing the pipe bore. We clear all three causes same day. No call-out charge, upfront price before we start.

Hair and Soap: the Usual Suspects

Most blocked baths and showers come down to hair and soap residue. Hair sheds naturally in the shower and collects in the drain cover and the trap beneath it — a combination of long hair and soap creates a felt-like mat that water cannot pass through. Clearing the drain cover screen regularly helps, but the hair that passes the cover accumulates in the trap and pipework below it.

Soap residue compounds the problem. Soap leaves a sticky film on the inside of the drain that catches hair more effectively and narrows the bore over time. Together they create a blockage that a plunger alone cannot shift — the clog needs to be physically removed from the trap or cleared with a jetting lance.

Limescale: Sheffield's Hard-Water Problem

Sheffield is supplied with hard water. The Pennine reservoir system draws water through carboniferous limestone, picking up dissolved calcium and magnesium bicarbonate. When this water is heated — in your hot water cylinder, boiler, or shower — the calcium deposits out of solution as calcium carbonate: limescale.

Inside a bath or shower drain, limescale builds up gradually on the inner surface of the pipe, narrowing its effective bore. A drain that was installed at the correct minimum diameter becomes, in effect, an undersized pipe — and blockages occur more readily. This is a slower process than hair accumulation but the result is the same: a drain that won't clear properly.

Where we find significant limescale build-up, we carry out descaling as part of the same visit — removing the mineral deposits and restoring the full bore of the pipe. See our drain descaling service for more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my shower drain block so often?
Shower drains are particularly prone to hair accumulation — a single shower can shed 50 to 100 strands of hair, which catch on the drain cover and the pipe below it. In Sheffield's hard-water area, limescale narrows the drain bore over time, making it easier for hair to catch and form a blockage. Regular clearing of the drain cover helps, but periodic professional jetting removes both the hair and the scale.
Is limescale really a significant issue in Sheffield?
Yes. Sheffield's water supply comes through limestone-rich Pennine geology and the Ladybower, Derwent, and Howden reservoirs, producing hard water across most of the city. This deposits limescale on shower heads, hot water cylinders, and inside drain pipes — gradually narrowing them. It is a genuine cause of slow drainage and recurring blockages in bath and shower drains.
What is drain descaling and do I need it?
Descaling removes mineral deposits — primarily calcium carbonate — from the inside of drain pipes using mechanical tools or specialist jetting techniques. If your bath or shower drain keeps blocking despite regular cleaning of the cover and trap, and your water runs slow without an obvious hair blockage, limescale narrowing of the pipe may be the cause.
Can a slow-draining bath damage my bathroom floor?
If water is backing up and standing in the bath or shower tray for extended periods, it can damage sealant around the bath and shower tray edges, eventually allowing water to seep below the tray. It is worth clearing a slow drain promptly rather than waiting for a complete blockage.
