North Sheffield's Drainage Heritage

Firth Park, named for the Firth Park public ground opened in 1875, was developed as working-class housing in the late Victorian period to house workers from the expanding steel industry to the east. The terraced streets of Page Hall, Firshill, and lower Firth Park were built densely and rapidly, and their drainage systems — laid in clay pipe — are of the same vintage.

After more than a century, these clay pipe systems are in the latter part of their service life. Joint cracking and displacement are common, and root intrusion from the mature street trees planted when the houses were built is a significant factor on many streets. In the original terraces closest to Firth Park itself, we frequently find drain runs that have not been touched since installation.

Interwar Estates: Shiregreen and Wincobank

The council estates built across Shiregreen and Wincobank in the 1920s and 1930s replaced some of the city's worst slum housing and were considered modern and well-served at the time. The drainage systems laid in these estates used concrete or salt-glazed vitrified clay pipe — materials that were improved over the Victorian standard but are now approaching 100 years old. Like their Victorian counterparts, they are subject to joint cracking and structural deterioration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What drainage problems are most common in Firth Park and Page Hall?
The dense terraced housing of Page Hall and Firth Park has some of the oldest clay drainage in the city. Joint failures, root intrusion, and accumulated grease in long, unventilated drain runs are the most frequent causes of blockages. Many properties also have combined drainage — foul and surface water in the same pipes — which can lead to flooding of external gullies when the main system is under load.
Do interwar council houses in Shiregreen have different drainage from Victorian terraces?
Yes — the interwar Sheffield City Council estates in Shiregreen and Wincobank (built 1920s–1940s) were constructed with concrete or early salt-glazed clay pipe rather than the hand-made clay pipe used in Victorian terraces. The joint systems are different, though the pipes are now equally old and share many of the same failure modes: cracking, joint displacement, and root intrusion.
Can you clear a drain that has multiple properties connected to it?
Yes. Many of the drain runs in Firth Park and Page Hall are shared between terraced houses. We identify the scope of the shared drain, clear the blockage, and advise on responsibility and any structural repairs needed.
