Drain Relining in Sheffield — No-Dig Drain & Pipe Repair

A cracked or fractured drain doesn't always mean digging up your garden or yard. Drain relining repairs the pipe from the inside — a resin-impregnated liner cured in place forms a new pipe within the old one. We survey first so you only pay to reline what's actually damaged.

Why Sheffield Drains Need Relining

Much of Sheffield's housing is dense Victorian terracing climbing the city's hills — Walkley, Crookes, Sharrow, and Heeley — and the steel-era terraces of the east end, all sitting on original clay drainage that cracks at the joints after a century of service. On the steeper, leafier streets, roots from mature trees find those cracks and force their way in. Relining seals them without tearing up a terraced yard or a period garden.

Postwar estates in areas such as Gleadless and Southey Green often have pitch-fibre pipes — a mid-20th-century material that collapses inward over time as it softens with age. Where the pipe still holds its shape, relining can restore it. Where it has fully deformed, excavation is needed; we will always tell you which applies rather than sell you a liner that won't work.

When Relining Is the Right Fix

  • Hairline cracks and fractures in clay or concrete pipes
  • Displaced or open joints that are letting in roots or ground water
  • Root intrusion through joints (after root removal)
  • Minor partial collapses where the pipe still holds its shape
  • Corroded sections in older iron or brick-lined drains
  • Recurring blockages caused by an irregular internal surface

If a pipe has fully collapsed or is severely misaligned, relining is not possible — that requires excavation. We will confirm this with CCTV before recommending any repair method.

How the Relining Process Works

  1. CCTV survey: We pass a camera through the drain to map the damage and confirm the pipe is suitable for relining.
  2. High-pressure cleaning and descaling: The pipe is jetted clean. In Sheffield's hard-water area, limescale build-up is removed at this stage.
  3. Root removal if needed: Mechanical cutters or jetting clear any root material, confirmed by a second camera pass.
  4. Liner insertion: A flexible felt tube saturated with two-part resin is winched into position covering the damaged section.
  5. Inflation and cure: The liner is inflated against the pipe wall using air or water pressure and held while the resin cures — typically two to four hours.
  6. Final CCTV inspection: We confirm the liner has seated correctly and the repair is complete before leaving site.

The whole job is typically completed within a single working day with no excavation and no mess. The finished liner is approximately 6 mm thick, jointless, and chemically resistant.

What It Costs

Relining is priced per metre of pipe after the survey, with the survey cost set against the job if you go ahead. You get a fixed quote before any work starts — no hidden charges, no call-out fee. Call us for an indicative price based on your property type and drain length.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a relined drain last?
A correctly installed resin liner carries a design life of 50 years or more and is typically backed by a long-term guarantee. The cured-in-place lining is jointless and resistant to root intrusion, making it more durable than the original clay pipe it encases.
Will you need to dig anything up?
In most cases, no. We access the pipe through an existing manhole, inspection chamber, or end-cap point. The liner is winched in and inflated from the surface — no excavation required. The exception is where there is no suitable access point, in which case we may need to create one.
Is relining always cheaper than replacing the pipe?
Almost always, yes. Excavating a pipe beneath a driveway, garden path, or kitchen floor and reinstating the surface adds significant cost. Relining skips that entirely. The only situations where excavation becomes necessary are full pipe collapse or severe displacement where the pipe has lost its shape.
Can you reline a drain that has tree roots in it?
Yes — but we deal with the roots first. We use mechanical cutting equipment or high-pressure jetting to remove all root material before the liner is inserted. The cured liner then seals the crack or joint where roots were entering, preventing re-growth. We always confirm the root clearance with a post-cut CCTV pass.
