Soakaways and Sheffield's Soils

Sheffield sits across a significant geological boundary. Properties in the west and south-west — Dore, Totley, Ecclesall, and the hillsides above the Limb Valley — are on Millstone Grit sandstone, which is generally free-draining. Moving east into the Don Valley and the flatter ground around Tinsley, Attercliffe, and Darnall, the soil becomes heavier clay — poor for soakaway drainage.

Sheffield's steep terrain adds a further complication: a soakaway on a hillside must be positioned carefully to avoid creating a wet patch that undermines foundations or retaining walls downslope. We carry out a percolation test — measuring how quickly water disperses through the soil at the proposed location — before recommending installation. If the ground is unsuitable, we will say so and discuss alternative surface water drainage options rather than install a soakaway that will not perform.

What the Installation Involves

1. Site assessment and percolation test: Carried out to building regulations standard (BRE Digest 365).
2. Sizing calculation: Based on roof or surface area being drained and the tested infiltration rate.
3. Excavation: To the depth required by the calculation — typically 1–2 m for a domestic soakaway.
4. Installation: Modular crate units wrapped in geotextile fabric, connected to the incoming surface-water drain.
5. Backfill and reinstatement: Compacted and reinstated — grass seeded, paving reset, or tarmac relaid as required.
