Private Sewer vs Yorkshire Water Responsibility

Under legislation enacted in 2011, most shared sewers in England and Wales — including those in Sheffield — were transferred to water companies. Yorkshire Water now maintains and repairs adopted sewers across the region. However, a private drain or sewer within your own property boundary remains your responsibility, even if it ultimately connects to the Yorkshire Water network.

If you are unsure where the boundary of responsibility lies, we can advise after a CCTV survey. If the problem turns out to be on a Yorkshire Water sewer, we will let you know so you can report it to them rather than pay for a repair that is theirs to carry out.

Sewer Repair Methods

No-Dig Sewer Relining

Where the sewer pipe is cracked, has displaced joints, or suffers from root intrusion but still holds its overall shape, we can reline it without excavation. A resin-impregnated liner is inserted through an access chamber, inflated against the pipe wall, and cured in place — sealing cracks and joints from the inside. This method is particularly well-suited to Sheffield's Victorian clay sewers, which crack at their mortar joints as the ground shifts on the city's slopes.

Excavation and Replacement

Where the sewer has fully collapsed or is so severely deformed that a liner cannot be inserted, excavation is unavoidable. We keep the dig to the minimum required — confirmed by CCTV — and reinstate all disturbed surfaces after the repair.

Sewage Surfacing — Emergency Response

Raw sewage emerging from drain covers or appearing in gardens is a health hazard and a drainage emergency. We are available 24 hours a day for sewage surfacing incidents. Call us immediately — do not attempt to clear sewage yourself without appropriate protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a drain and a sewer?
A drain serves a single property and is the owner's responsibility. A sewer collects waste from two or more properties. Since 2011, most shared sewers have been adopted by Yorkshire Water — but private sewers within the boundary of one property remain the owner's responsibility.
Who is responsible for sewer repairs in Sheffield?
Yorkshire Water is responsible for adopted sewers (most shared sewers adopted in 2011). Private drains and any unadopted sewers within your property boundary remain your responsibility. If you are unsure, we can advise based on where the fault lies in the system.
Can you repair a sewer without digging it up?
In many cases, yes. Where the sewer is cracked or has root ingress but still holds its shape, we can use no-dig relining to seal and restore it. If the sewer has fully collapsed or is severely displaced, excavation is needed. CCTV survey confirms which approach is right before any work starts.
Sewage is coming up through my drain cover — what should I do?
Surfacing sewage is an emergency. Keep people and pets away from the affected area, avoid flushing toilets if you can, and call us immediately. If the sewage is backing up from a shared sewer, Yorkshire Water has a 24-hour emergency line, though private-drain faults remain your responsibility to resolve.
